Addressing Healthcare Disparities for LGBTQ/Sexual Minorities- A 2 Part Workshop

  • November 30, 2017
  • December 7, 2017

Speaker:  Philip T. McCabe CSW, CAS, CDVC, DRCC,  Rutgers School of Public Health, LGBT Cultural Diversity Rutgers School of Nursing

Sexuality minority individuals are often under-served or subject to inequitable or discriminatory practices in health care. They can also be reluctant to disclose their sexual orientation with providers based on previous experiences with heterosexism, judgment, discrimination, alienation or mistrust. Providers need to understand the complexity of sexual identity and gender expression in working with LGBTQ individuals. Social and cultural variables, mental health, trauma and substance abuse, in addition to specific risk behaviors will be discussed. Creating a LGBTQ welcoming environment along with Developing Non-Discriminatory, LGBTQ Affirmative Policy is essential in order to reduce health risks of vulnerable populations.

November 30- Part 1 Objectives:

  • Identify three strategies for creating culturally sensitive interactions.
  • Identify two ways service providers can create affirming and welcoming environments for LGBT people.

December 7- Part 2 Objectives:

  • Identify two health issues/behaviors for which LGBT clients have a higher risk.
  • Identify two factors that might contribute to health disparities among LGBT patients
