What Home Care Providers Need to Know About Health Care Reform Teleconference
Speaker: Elizabeth e. Hogue, Esq.
Health Care Attorney and Consultant
Washington, DC

Health care reform will undoubtedly result in changes with far reaching effects on home health agencies, hospices, and home medical equipment (HME) companies. There will, for example, likely be significant changes regarding patients' right to freedom of choice of providers. Increased utilization of telemedicine makes it important for providers to know how to manage their risks related to its use. Providers will likely also be subject to more stringent fraud and abuse compliance requirements. The purpose of this audioconference is to provide insight and details regarding these changes with an emphasis on practical application to operations.

Home Health Aide Teleconference Series: The Aide's Role in Conflict Resolution
Speaker: Jan Helsper, RN

Conflict will always be present, both in workplace and in our personal lives. Conflict is not necessarily a bad thing as long as it is resolved appropriately. The outcome of a conflict very much depends on the participant’s conflict resolution skills. A positive outcome can lead to an increased understanding and better working relationship between the people involved. This workshop will assist the aide in understanding the five main conflict styles as well as recognizing and handling conflict. It will include tips on how to manage behaviors, apply problem-solving techniques and provide appropriate feedback.

Dealing Effectively with Non-Compliant Patients and Their Caregivers Teleconference
Home care field staff and their managers continue to encounter patients and/or their caregivers who are chronically non-compliant with patients' plans of care. In addition to the serious consequences of non-compliance for patients, clinicians face enhanced risk of legal liability for non-compliant patients because it is very difficult to separate non-compliance from substandard care. What should clinicians do when they encounter instances of non-compliance by patients? What can staff and management do about primary caregivers who are non-compliant? The purpose of this audio-conference is to provide specific, practical guidance about how to address non-compliance in order to help achieve compliance and avoid liability.

According to the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, 9,000 healthcare workers each day are victims of workplace violence. Healthcare personnel is only 18% of the workforce, but accounts for 48% of workplace violence victims. These statistics are frightening. Nurses, Therapists and other home care professionals are 12.5 times more likely to be a victim of job-related violence. This program will help employees and paraprofessionals understand effective workplace violence prevention measures. Violence inflicted on employees may come from many sources--- external parties such as robbers or muggers and internal parties such as coworkers and patients. In all cases we emphasize awareness and avoidance first then harm reduction in the event of an actual attack or assault.

Home Health Aide Teleconference Series: The Aide's Role in Depression and Social Isolation
Speaker: Jan Helsper, RN

A growing number of Americans are becoming socially isolated. In fact, one quarter of all Americans say that they have no one with whom, they can discuss personal troubles. Social isolation has been shown to contribute to higher mortality, especially among medically vulnerable groups of individuals. The elderly are particularly prone to depression and a variety of health related issues brought on by social isolation. This workshop will help the aide recognize the signs of social isolation and depression, understand some of the health related issues, and identify ways to help improve the patient’s social interaction.

Home Health Aide Teleconference Series: The Aide's Role in Pain Management
Pain is one of the most frequent complaints amongst older patients. Pain can be caused by acute, chronic or terminal conditions. We often find that pain is not well controlled due to varying reasons such as reluctance to report pain, fear of becoming addicted, and lack of understanding of pain control and the medications prescribed. Pain can greatly impact our patients’ lives, leading to depression, loss of appetite, social isolation, lack of sleep and an inability to cope as well as loss of physical function. This workshop will provide the aide with information on their role in improving patient pain.

Home Health Aide Teleconference Series: The Aide's Role in Fostering Independence
For all of us, one of our greatest fears is losing our independence and self-sufficiency. It is all too common to see someone “give up” because he or she feels they are a burden to others. Encouraging independence is one of the most important aspects of the care an in-home aide provides. Maintaining independence at home brings a sense of pride and accomplishment and ensures our quality of life. This workshop will help the aide finds ways to promote their patient’s independence even in the face of reluctance and stubbornness!
