In fact, one quarter of all Americans say that they have no one with whom, they can discuss personal troubles. Social isolation has been shown to contribute to higher mortality, especially among medically vulnerable groups of individuals. The elderly are particularly prone to depression and a variety of health related issues brought on by social isolation.
